Fall and winter are tough seasons on skin — harsh temperatures, hot showers and the dry indoor air can take a toll on your skin. Then, once spring arrives you lift your head up and out from your protective gear and headwear, only to reveal dry cracked skin. So how does one transition from one season to another with healthy skin? With just a few steps you can take your skin from winter to spring. 

Steps to a spring transition

Add more SPF. 

SPF is recommended year-round. Even minimal sun exposure can damage your skin and it's even more important to add that extra SPF in the transition time from winter to spring. Also, we often forget we need protection when the sun doesn't feel that hot in the springy weather. 

But, don't forget! Every morning, put on at least SPF 30, whether it's already in your moisturizer or you throw it on top of your favorite serum or toner. Although it may be one extra step added to your morning routine, it will save you a lot of headache and skin-ache this season. 

Switch to lighter products.

Skin holds more water in the warmer months, so it tends to need less moisturizer than in the winter. However, that doesn't mean you should neglect your moisturizing routine. Instead, opt for lighter, more natural products that won't sweat off or harm your skin when they come in contact with the sun's UV rays. For example, a good body butter is a great option (but you still need SPF). 

When transitioning from winter to spring, don't go too heavy or even too light. Instead, use lighter creams during the day and heavier ones at night. This will help your skin readjust to the changing season while still staying hydrated. 

Exfoliate once or twice per week. 

Exfoliation with a good body scrub is the number one winter skincare tip, because it helps to minimize flakiness and dryness that come with cold weather. But exfoliation is equally as important in the spring to ensure that your skin doesn't become "stagnant" in the sun. 

Your skin retains more moisture and oil in the warmer months. However, as it moves from the winter to the spring, it can lose moisture in the transition. This means that you need to continue to exfoliate in order to keep your skin smooth and healthy. Exfoliation also helps prepare your skin to better absorb serums and moisturizers.

It's time for a facial. 

It's recommended to get a facial every time the season changes. This helps your skin readjust to the new weather and protect against allergens, pollutants, and other climate-related elements. Ditch old products. 

Spring-cleaning applies to your skincare routine as well! Ditch any products that are more than 6 months old. Just like the weather is different in April and October, so is your skin! Clean out your cabinets for clearer skin, and invest in new serums and toners that will work with your face--not against it.
